Quick answer

Guildford's A&E is at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Egerton Road, GU2 7XX, open 24 hours. For urgent problems that are not life-threatening, use NHS 111 first. The nearest urgent treatment centres are in Woking (Heathside Road, GU22 7HS) and Haslemere (Church Lane, GU27 2BJ). Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency.

Which service do you need

  • Life-threatening emergency: call 999. The NHS gives serious road accidents, strokes and heart attacks as examples.
  • Serious injury or illness: go to A&E. The nearest is the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
  • Urgent but not life-threatening: use NHS 111 first, online at 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111. It can send you to an urgent treatment centre, an out-of-hours GP or a pharmacy.
  • Not sure: NHS 111.

A&E: Royal Surrey County Hospital

The emergency department is at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Egerton Road, Guildford, GU2 7XX. The NHS website lists it as open 24 hours for people of all ages. The hospital switchboard is 01483 571122.

The hospital says patients are seen in order of clinical priority, so if your problem is less urgent you may face a very long wait. If your condition is not life-threatening, it asks you to contact NHS 111 before coming. NHS 111 can book you in if you do need the emergency department.

If you arrive without a referral from 111 or a GP, you will be asked a series of questions and then see a streaming nurse. The nurse may book you into another service, such as a GP, the urgent treatment centre, a dentist or a pharmacy.

Getting there

The hospital warns that the postcode takes sat navs to the back of the site. For the main entrance, carry on at the traffic lights onto Gill Avenue and follow the car park signs.

By bus, the hospital says Safeguard route 5 runs from the town centre via the railway station to the hospital, with route 4 for the return. Stagecoach route 1 also serves the hospital. Surrey County Council's timetable page lists both.

The NHS advises that you do not drive yourself to A&E. Ask someone to take you, or call 999.

Parking

On-site parking is very limited, the hospital says. Charges apply 24 hours a day, every day. As listed on the Royal Surrey website on 9 October 2026:

  • One hour: £4.10
  • Two hours: £5.30
  • Three hours: £6.00
  • Four hours: £6.50
  • Six hours: £7.60
  • 24 hours: £11.10

You must pay before you leave. The hospital says payment can also be made up to 24 hours later through the Trust Parking app, and that failing to pay may lead to a £40 parking charge notice. Blue Badge parking is free if your vehicle is registered with the trust. Check the hospital's getting here page for current charges.

Urgent treatment centres

There is no urgent treatment centre listed in Guildford itself. The Royal Surrey's page on alternatives to A&E names two in the local area. Both are walk-in.

Woking Urgent Treatment Centre

Heathside Road, Woking, GU22 7HS. Phone 01483 846209. The Royal Surrey describes it as a nurse-led centre for minor illness and injuries, open 8am to 8pm seven days a week, including bank holidays. Confirm the hours with NHS 111 before you travel, as we could not open the centre's own website to check them.

Haslemere Urgent Treatment Centre

Church Lane, Haslemere, GU27 2BJ. Phone 01483 956 524. This is run by the Royal Surrey. Its own page says it is open daily from 8am to 5pm, with the last new patient booked in at 4pm. It is for adults and children aged one and over.

It treats problems that started within the last two weeks, such as sprains and strains, suspected broken limbs, minor head injuries, minor burns and scalds, skin infections and rashes, eye problems, fever in adults and children, and abdominal pain.

It cannot treat serious or life-threatening conditions, head injuries with any loss of consciousness, toothache, mental health problems, pregnancy problems, vomiting and diarrhoea, or children under one.

The centre recommends calling NHS 111 first. 111 can give you a time slot, which cuts the wait.

NHS 111

NHS 111 is for when you think you need medical help right now but it is not an emergency. Use it online, in the NHS App or by phone. Calls are free. The NHS says 111 online is for people aged 5 and over, so call 111 for a child under 5.

It can:

  • tell you whether you need A&E
  • direct you to an urgent treatment centre
  • arrange an evening or weekend GP appointment
  • arrange urgent dental or mental health support
  • arrange an emergency supply of your regular medicine through a pharmacy

When to call 999

Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies. The call handler will ask where you are, what has happened and for a contact number. The NHS notes that calling 999 does not always mean an ambulance is sent. You may be told it is safe to make your own way to A&E.

While you wait, stay with the person, and call 999 again if their condition or your location changes.

Other A&E departments nearby

The next nearest A&E on the NHS website's list for Guildford is Frimley Park Hospital, Portsmouth Road, Camberley, GU16 7UJ, also listed as open 24 hours.

For minor problems

A pharmacist can help with many minor illnesses without an appointment. See our guide to Guildford pharmacy opening hours. For ongoing problems, contact your GP surgery.
