Shalford

A village and civil parish just south of Guildford, where the Tillingbourne meets the River Wey, with its own railway station.

Shalford is a village and civil parish in the Guildford district, on the A281 Horsham road immediately south of Guildford. It has a railway station on the line between Guildford and Dorking. At the 2011 census the parish had a population of 4,142.

History

Shalford appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The village was known for the Great Fair of Shalford, set up by a charter from King John. The present St Mary's church was built in 1846, and many older cottages survive.

The rivers and the mill

The River Tillingbourne joins the River Wey at Shalford, next to the parish church. Shalford Mill, the surviving mill, is preserved as a tourist attraction. Cranleigh Waters joins the Wey at the northern end of the Wey and Arun Canal.
